Sports Cards (V1 → V2)
Evolving a UX concept into a scalable, system-aligned component.
Overview
As sports content became a core part of the Fubo experience, users needed a way to quickly understand game status, scores, and team information while browsing content. The original Sports Card (V1) extended our existing Row Card component to support sports metadata, but the solution evolved differently across upcoming and live game states.
I led the redesign of the component by introducing a unified Scorebug system that standardized the experience across states while simplifying implementation for engineering teams. The result was a more scalable, maintainable, and consistent sports card framework that could support future sports experiences across the platform.

Sports Card Evolution
01. Understanding the Problem
The first version of Sports Cards helped bring game information directly into the browsing experience, but it evolved differently for upcoming and live games. As a result, the experience felt inconsistent and required separate implementation approaches behind the scenes.
Challenges
Upcoming and live games used different visual patterns.
Sports metadata was handled through separate backend and frontend solutions.
Maintaining and expanding the component became increasingly complex.
Opportunity
This presented an opportunity to rethink the component as a scalable system rather than a collection of individual solutions. By creating a shared framework for sports metadata, we could deliver a more consistent experience, simplify implementation, and build a stronger foundation for future sports features.
02. Designing a Scalable Solution
To address the inconsistencies between upcoming and live games, I introduced a reusable Scorebug component that became the shared framework for sports metadata.
Key Decisions
Unify the experience with a consistent structure across all game states.
Simplify implementation through a single frontend solution.
Build for scale with a reusable framework designed for future sports experiences.
Outcome
One pattern across all game states
Reduced engineering complexity
Scalable foundation for future growth
This version lets the visuals tell most of the story while keeping the focus on your strategic thinking and decision-making.
03. Impact
The new Scorebug framework unified sports metadata under a single solution, improving consistency for users while reducing complexity for engineering teams.
User Experience
Consistent experience across all game states
Improved readability and hierarchy
Engineering
Single frontend implementation
Reduced maintenance and complexity
